Tornado in a Bottle

 

 

Tornados are not part of Northern Ireland’s weather but in parts of the world they can cause a lot of damage. 

 

Just last week the threat of a tornado stopped a planned launch of a space shuttle. You can see it at the link below:

Let’s explore what happens when there is a tornado to understand why they are so dangerous.  

 

To do this simple science activity, you will need: 

  • two empty bottles (2 litre bottles work best, but you can try both small and large bottles) 
  • water 
  • food coloring (optional) 
  • cellotape or hot glue 
  • duct tape 

 

  1) Clean and rinse your empty bottles and fill one with water. 

  2)Add a drop of food coloring.  

  3) Join the openings of two bottles together with cellotape or hot glue if you          have it. 

  4)Once you have joined the two bottles, wrap the center in duct tape for               extra security.
