Friday 9th October 2020
Good Morning Everyone,
Friday is usually a very busy day in school. We normally start with our Friday Test. You can ask your child to write 10 words and 10 tables from their Phonics and Mental Maths books.
Accelerated Reader - spend 20 mins reading
Doodle maths - spend 10/15 mins
Literacy:
Watch ‘Mary Poppins (1964) ‘The Children Visit Uncle Albert’ and then ‘A British Bank’ scenes.
Both are available online.
Mr Banks is scolding Mary for being too much fun. He lists his expectations of the children and in return she suggests that he bring them to work with him in the bank for a day.
Think about the different characters, how are they feeling? How do you know?
Write some questions to Mr Banks, Mary Poppins, Jane and Michael.
In class we would have been ‘Hot Seating’, we would have been pretending to be a character and answering the questions as that person. As we are unable to do this today you could pretend you are one of the characters, can you answer the questions you have written?
or
If you find this to be too difficult then you could choose a character and describe them, what do we know about these characters so far from the scenes we have watched?
Numeracy:
We are still working on clocks and time today.
The following game could be useful for your child to play.
Choose a level suited to your child.
http://www.ictgames.com/mobilePage/hickoryDickory/
Today we are learning about counting on and back (1 hour, 30mins, 15 mins)
Yesterday we showed how to clock could be broken up into 5 minute intervals. The children will be working on word problems today. This is revision as they would have done some work on this in Primary 4.
Read the questions, what part of the question tells us we need to move the clock forward or back?
By how much time do we need to move the clock.
If your child would like some help I would recommend using the following link:
https://www.topmarks.co.uk/time/teaching-clock
or
If your child finds the word problems challenging, please use one of the following worksheets:
‘An hour before and after’
‘An hour or half hour before and after’
‘An hour, half hour or quarter of an hour before or after.’
Choose a sheet that is suitable for your child.
Learning to tell the time is an important skill, it is worth talking about the time with your child and making it a part of your everyday conversations. If your child has a clock or watch encourage them to use it and try to tell the time themselves.
Golden Time:
Golden time is a very important time in our children’s week. It is a chance for them to relax and just have a little bit of quiet time.
All of the children have worked very hard this week and so have the adults in their lives! Mrs Mitchell and I have decided to give them a list of ‘fun’ suggestions for this afternoon.
You could try baking?
Building a den?
Drawing or colouring?
Playing a board game?
An indoor scavenger hunt?
Designing your own town?
Or just snuggle up and watch a movie.
Do anything fun together!
and
Don’t forget to hug someone you love this weekend! π
If you need any help or want to send me some work, I would be delighted to see it!
Thanks,
Mrs Kells

Literacy
Watch Mary Poppins (1964)
‘The police officer returns the children’ scene. This is available online.
Think about each character, how might they be feeling?
How do you think things might change?
Mr Banks is going to hire a Nanny for the children.
Write a letter to Mr Banks (the children’s father) asking him to employ a kind nanny.
You might want to use reasons for your request for a kind nanny, would it help the children? In what way?
What do you think might make a good nanny?
Look at the powerpoint presentation, it will show you how to write a letter with tips and advice for a good persuasive letter.
WILF: Two or three clear paragraphs explaining why the children need a kind Nanny.
I have also attached a page with some writing prompts, you can use some of the words in the word bank to help you with your letter.
Read your letter to someone, can you edit it for improvement?
You can write this letter or type it on the computer.
Numeracy
We have been working on time and clocks in the classroom for our non-number numeracy.
Last week we worked on O’clock, quarter past, half past and quarter to.
We discussed the minute hand and hour hand and they way to read them and convert to a digital clock.
You can use this link to look at a clock and convert from digital to analogue and vice versa. https://www.topmarks.co.uk/time/teaching-clock
This Powerpoint presentation can explain 5 minute time intervals.
Choose one of the activity sheets for your child to work on.
There is a sheet for
A: 5 minute intervals
B: Revising O’Clock, quarter past, half past and quarter to
C: O’clock and half past.
Handwriting:
We have been encouraging the children to work on their handwriting. We haven’t started working on cursive writing so just get your child to write out the following poem in their own best writing. Trying to keep the letters a similar size.
Your Best
If you always try your best
Then you’ll never have to wonder
About what you could have done
If you’d summoned all your thunder
And if your best
Was not as good
As you hoped it would be,
You still could say,
“I gave today
All that I had in me.”

Art-
We usually do art on a Thursday afternoon.
In class we have been learning about the Artist Henri Rousseau and The Pointillism Style.
It would be nice if the children could look at Rousseau’s Rainforest art and create their own pictures. As you may or may not have art materials available juat use what you have. If your child would like to draw a picture of a favourite rainforest animal and decorate it using pointillism this would be great too! Let your creative juices flow, we usually listen to some rainforest sounds or music as background noise. Get creative! I can’t wait to see what you do!
A few other ideas are:
Rainforest in a Jar – If you have the materials available
The Monkey Painting – If you have paints
Accelerated Reader - spend 20 mins reading
Doodle maths - spend 10/15 mins

Most children will be ready to do HTU subtraction with exchange today - if this is the case for your child they can complete the work from textbook page 11. Other children will need to continue with Tens and Units only without any exchanging so choose the appropriate TU sheet.
Some children may also need cubes or counters to help them taking away.

Home Learning WB 5th October 2020
Hello everyone,
We hope you are well and we send you our best wishes. While at home we would encourage you to make use of the Doodle Apps. We have access to Doodle Maths, Doodle English, Doodle Tables and Doodle Spell. We would recommend you use these apps regularly. We would also encourage you to continue reading, read your AR book or any books you may have at home. You can also read books online using the 'Libby App', this is the library app and it is free to access.
This week we will be posting some worksheets for you to use at home. You can write these out on a page, in a book or you can print them if you have access to a printer.
Monday - Subtraction.
This work is Subtraction without regrouping. This means that you need to work on subtracting in each column one at a time. Subtract the units column first and then the tens. If there are hundreds subtract them. Write the answer in the same column as the question.

If you are unable to print the page don't worry about colouring the squares, just write out the questions and show your answers.
Monday - Verbs
A verb is an action word, some people say they are 'doing words'.
Page 1.
Part I
You can print off the pages and underline the verbs or you can write out the sentences and underline the verbs.
Part II
Write out the sentences and add a verb from the list.
Page 2.
Part A: Look at the picture and write a list of verbs, what are the people doing?
Part B: Read the sentences and add a suitable verb of your own.
Part C: Add -ing to each of the verbs to describe what is being done.
Last week of term - 22nd June
This week there is no planner but instead we have some fun activities for pupils to complete. There are some Time Capsule activities linked to Covid -19 and also an end of school year memories worksheet. Thankyou for all your efforts with home learning.
Remember to collect your child's report and other belongings on Wednesday 24th June. Thankyou!
HOME LEARNING WB 15th June
As we are nearing the end of term we are not putting on a full week's planner to follow. Instead, this week we would like pupils to complete a fun Multiplication Mosaic, work on their Air, Wind and Flight projects and continue with the Doodle Maths and Doodle English apps. Keep on reading too!
